Meet Some of Our Veterans

Sam Roth
When Sam retired from the U.S. Navy after twenty-six years, he was looking for something that would challenge him as much as Naval Aviation. After an initial twelve week Hiring Our Heroes (HoH) fellowship, Sam transitioned his 26-year career worth of life, organizational skills and leadership to the operations side of construction management. While his background isn’t necessarily in architecture, engineering or construction, Sam was a perfect fit as one of the first Hiring Our Heroes Fellows to join Haskell.
Hiring Our Heroes is a nationwide initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation that helps service members transitioning out of the military to find meaningful employment. Haskell entered a partnership with the program in the winter and welcomed Fetzer as the first member of its 10-member initial cohort. NOTE: I was the second cohort in the fall of 2022 with follow full-time offer in February of 2023.
“I was looking for something outside of Department of Defense (DoD) contracting and a career that would provide some of the comradery inherent to being a Naval Officer and new challenges outside of the cockpit”
Sam was a Naval Aviator, flying the MH-60B and MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, accumulating more than 2600 hours over multiple deployments around the world. He began his career as an enlisted jet mechanic in 1996 and after graduating from Penn State University, gained his commission in 2003 through Navy ROTC. His tours include multiple flying tours, detachment Officer in Charge (OIC), senior aide to the FIFTH FLEET Commander, and squadron maintenance officer. He retired in January 2023 as a commander (O5).
During his 12-week fellowship at Haskell, Sam experienced the role of an Assistant Project Manager (APM) in the municipal market, assisting with the Winston Family YMCA renovation. After joining Haskell full time as an APM, Sam gained the majority of his experience in the wastewater market, working on multiple projects in the greater Jacksonville area.
He spends four days each week with Haskell colleagues, then spends Fridays in training conducted by Hiring Our Heroes. In those sessions, he shares experiences with others in the program and receives additional training in areas like workplace skills and interview coaching.
“Being on a project team is comparable to being a member of a squadron ready room and the closest thing to a detachment atmosphere, I believe I could experience in the civilian workplace. Having that group of individuals come together for a common goal, each executing their portion of the mission and relying on each other for support is a great feeling and it’s exceptionally rewarding to see your project cross the finish line!”
After 2 years in the field as an APM, Sam has transitioned to the role of Project Management Operations Manager. He has taken his field experience and combined it with his leadership and problem-solving skills to work with project teams in the areas of operations support, supervisor support, and career development.
